| Firefighters Station # 1 @ Pueblo |
El Pueblo or Fort Pueblo was founded by trappers and traders 150 years ago. It was later destroyed by Native Americans, abandoned for some years and rebuilt about 1859 during the gold rush ... Pueblo developed later by steel. Today there are approximately 150 000 inhabitants. The climate is hot and dry (semi-arid). The advantage of this type of climate is that there are no mosquitoes. Just as in Colorado Springs, we can make some disturbing encounters bears, cougars (no, not mature women young men who hunt ...), coyotes, snakes ... Both say that we avoid houses away when night falls!
We arrived yesterday afternoon and we had, as usual, a very nice welcoming committee. Everyone has got to know his family of Rotary for the next 5 days: Marie is staying with Terry Book, president of a club of Pueblo, Julien and Nicolas staying with Lou and Pam Roberts and Jeff and I live in Libya Stuyt. Jeff is originally from Holland and professor of environmental sciences at the University of Pueblo and Libya is a psychiatrist (I have a subscription to psychiatrists). Our interlocutor is the place charming and devoted Holly Hanson. We are all installed as roosters paste!
Upon our arrival, we have the pleasure to go to a Beth Gladney "Rotary cocktail party." Gargantuan buffet, wines from all countries including Gewurztraminer! The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the hour is a joke and laughter erupting continuously.
We begin our program of professional visits the next morning at 9am. I'll discover the non-profit association "United Way" Mary will visit the rehabilitation center of Parkview Hospital and Nicolas and Julien are in the operating room at St. Mary Corwin Hospital to attend the full knee replacement by a prosthesis made of titanium (video of the procedure here: VIDEO - Warning these are surgery pictures, they can shock).
Small digression: Pueblo has two hospitals because the city is bisected by the Arkansas River. When it was flooded and bridges were less reliable today, half the town was a private hospital as he was decided to build a second so that everyone can have access to care of both sides of the river.
The United Way collects donations and return them to partner organizations including the Red Cross or Army Hi. Last year, the organization has raised almost 1 million dollars in donations of which 65% are salaried people. Americans in general are easily donations to their means of course.
Marie and I were then interviewed one of the leaders of social service of Parkview Hospital, which we described the various programs care provided for children and adults with behavioral problems and / or addiction, for seniors over 60 years of age with behavioral disorders and sexually abused minors, abused ... They use new techniques such as "art therapy", "music therapy" acupuncture etc. ... She noted in passing that some states have yet to date and use of trepanning ECT for people with psychiatric disorders! You'll get a glimpse of the thing by revisiting the famous "Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" with Jack Nicholson (Film 1975).
After lunch, Marie, Julian and Nicolas saw Beth arrive driving a red convertible beautiful American Vintage! Their state of high excitement already passed to the next level when they boarded and were driven to the fire station in the city where they could put a heavy necessary and required from a truck, any siren outside, the scene of three actual interventions. Their afternoon was hectic and gentlemen firefighters very caring ... especially for Mary ...
As for me, j'eu the privilege of meeting Betty Grant, coach companies like me. We had the opportunity to compare our methods and tools to work outside a golf club. Betty has 60 years is now in retirement. She has an exceptional charisma and experience on several continents. She was inexhaustible. I asked another interview with Mary and she has accepted a new RV on Sunday morning which will be coupled with a session of golf!
Then we all met for dinner in a pizzeria where we could share our experiences of the day. I do not describe the size of pizza ... It's simple, I've never seen it! We could not finish 2 pizzas to 6 people!
almost 2 am here! Soon I'll let you rest for my eyes!
Christine
